James's Growing Post

Question 1:
What is a good definition of percent? You should use words, symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.
A number that is out of 100. An example is 25% or 25-100

Question 2:
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.
They are all equivalents. For example if you use the ratio 3:2 you add the numbers together then your answer becomes 5, so you use the 5 as the denominator and the 3 is the numerator. After that you divide the numerator by the denominator and the answer is 0.6. With that you times it by 100 and the answer would be 60%.

Question 3:
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

1) 35/35=1
35/100=0.35
0.35*80=28

2)100/100=1% 80 divided by 100 = 0.8

3)80/100=0.8

Question 4:
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with review.
http://linden8m.blogspot.com/2006/11/understanding-percentages.html#links

Question 5:
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not

I think she is could be correct because there are more people in Ms. Stanzi’s class than Ms. Lowrey’s class.

Question 2
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

I will show you how 3/5, 3:2, 60% and 0.6 are all the same. I used 3:2 to show you. I turned the ratio into fraction, decimal and percent.
3:2 -->3(3)/5(3+2) -->(3 divided by 5) 0.6--> (0.6 x 100) 60%

Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review (What the post was talking about....yes you have to read the post and why others should read the post) Hint In the side bar there are links to other schools. Three of them have done work on percentages!

I commented on this great post. This post was very easy to understand and it included some examples about percentages. Such as when you are taking a french test that is out of 50 and there's a bonus question that is worth 5% . If you get that correct and all the other questions then it is possible to get 55/50 which is 110%.

The post also teaches how to simplify fractions and it also teaches that percentage actually means "Per Hundred" and
that percent is over 100 or /100. The post also included terms that are mostly used in percentage such as "of" meaning "multiply". Also with the "/" meaning "divide".You guys should read that post, you'll learn alot and some of the information we already know so it will serve as a review to you guys.

Question 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

It didn't mentioned how many students each teacher had. To show you how Ms. Stanzi could be CORRECT, I imagined she had 46 students while Ms. Lowery had 40 students.

3.5/5

It's a great post because the examples the person uses really helps you to understand percentages. I only had one little suggestion for the person, to have a better picture to use for 2/5. They put 2 pingpong tables, so it only represented the denominator. I made a suggestion for them to put 5 groups of stick people (representing the family) and have 2 of them with a pingpong table. If the person who did that put a picture like i suggested, i would've given them 4/5.

Ms. Stanzi can be CORRECT because they never mentioned how many students there are in each class. Here is a diagram I made on Gliffy showing my work:

Question 6

Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

This album is powered by BubbleShare - Add to my blog

This question tells us that 40% of a number is 16, so we have to find what that number is exactly. So first you divide 16 by 4.

16 (divided by) 4 (or 40%) = 4

You divide it by 4 because to find 10% of something you must divide that number by 10. Then you must multiply it by the number of the groups of 10 you want, in this case 4. So basicly, we have to work backwards to find the answer to this question. To work backwards, you have to replace MULTIPLY into DIVIDE, and the same goes for the final step.

You are left with the number FOUR. 4 represents the amount that 10 unit cubes (a rod) stands for. In 100 unit cubes (a flat), there are 10 rods, or 10 GROUPS OF FOUR:

10 groups of 4 = 40

So there for 100% is equal to 40.

b) What is 120% of 30?

This album is powered by
BubbleShare - Add to my blog

**To fully understand this Bubbleshare presentation, please click on it =) It will allow you to see Jumpy and Frosty and their conversations.

This question is asking us to find 120% of 30. If you convert 120% percent into a fraction, it would be 120/100. Obviously that number is an improper fraction (the numerator is larger than the denominator), so you would need to squares to solve the problem. 100% would equal 30 and so, you would need to find 20% and then add it to 30. Well then, let's get started!

First, we need to find 10% of 30.

30 (divided by) 10 (10%) = 3

The next step is to multiply the product by two (2 groups of 10).

2 groups of 3 = 6 -or- 20%

All that's left to do is add 100% (30) to 20% (6). If you add those 2 together you get 120% (100 + 20 = 120)!

100 = 30
+20 = 6
120 = 36

And there you have it =) Oh! I forgot that i made a Bubbleshare thingy on it . . . Here it is =)

definition. (sugesstion gliffy is an excellent tool for adding detail to your definition."

Percent: "equivalent that is written as a fraction out of 10"

QUESTION.2
"How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer."

They are the same because they are all equal:

Three of them have done work on percentages!"

Here is a post on 8Z math that i commented on. It really helps for answering question 3 on our growing posts. It explains 3 different ways to find a percent.

http://linden8z.blogspot.com/2006/12/review-of-percent.html

QUESTION.5
"The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not."

She CAN be correct because there can be more students in half of Ms. Stanzi's class than in Ms. Lowrey's class.

QUESTION.6
"Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
a) 16 is 40% of what number?
The question asks us to find out what has 16 as 40%. To do this is simple. First we know that 40% + 40% + 20% = 100%. So since we already know that 16 = 40% of x, we just need to know what 20% is. To do that divide 40% by 2. (40%/2 = 20%). So 16/2 = 8, so we can say that 8 is 20% of x. And now we add everything together. 16 + 16 + 8 = 40. There. Now we know that x = 40, so 16 is 40% of 40.

b) What is 120% of 30?"
This one is easier than A. We know that 30 is 100% of 30. So we just need to add 20%. Just go...(30/100 = 0.3 x 20 = 6) So 30 + 6 = 36 and we conclude that 120% of 30 is 36.

Dakota's Growing Post 1-6

Question 1
What is a good definition of percent?
You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.
A percent is a number that is out of one hundred.Like 60% is 60/100 as a fraction, so as u can see,it is out of a hundred.
I dont know how to get Pics!
Question 2
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to showyour work.
1/5=20% 1/5 x 3=60%, .6x 10=60
3:2=part/part+whole=a fraction 1/5=20% 1/5x3=60%
I dont know how to get pics!
Question 3
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.
first we find out what 1% equals. 80 divided by 100 equals .8
so now we no wat 1% is so: .8 (1%)x35 equals 28 so 35% of 80 is 28
2. 1% is .8. .8 x 10=8 .8 x 10=8 .8 x 10=8 8+8+8=24
if 10% is 8, then 5% is 4. so 24 + 4=28
5 goes into 35 7 times. 5% is 4. 4x7=28

Question 4
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review.
http://linden8m.blogspot.com/2006/11/understanding-percentages.html#links
Question 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms. Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

Ms. Stantzi could be correct because her class might have more students in her class than Ms. Lowrey's classroom.
Example:
20/40 is 50% 11/20=55%
see, so even though Ms. Stanzi has a lower percentage of her students reaching the goal than Ms. Lowrey's students, she still has more children.

Question 6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
A) 16 is 40% of what number?
It's percentage is not 100% it is a lower number because 16 is smaller than 40. So Mr. Harbeck needs to know what # has 16 that is equal to 40%. This is what i thought of :40/100=.40 x 40=16 So the unit square is worth 40. 40=100% 16=40%
B) What is 120% of 30? I need to find out what 120% is when the whole number is 30. This is what I thought of so far :
30 x 120%= 36,003,600/100 =36120% =36
How do U get Pics?!

PS to justins growing post

For some reason I still can't upload pictures onto my computer because nothing pops up. Hopefully sometime next week I will try to fix my computer so it works.

Justin's Percentage Growing Post

Question 5:

The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

Ms. Stanzi: Ms. Lowrey:

40/2=20 40/1.5=26.66

No, she can't be correct because there is more of an average of students that are meeting their reading goal and the only way Ms. Stanzi could be correct is if a bigger number of kids start improving their reading.

Question 6:
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
a) 16 is 40% of what number?
b) What is 120% of 30?

a) 40% of 100 is 40
40/100=0.4
16 x 0.4=40
40/100 = 16/40

I got this answer by first dividing 40 by 100 and that gives me 0.4.So then you multiply the decimal by the part and that gives you 40% of 16.

b) 120% of 100 is 120
120/100=1.2
30 x 1.2=36

120/100 = 36/30

I got this answer by first finding out what 120% of 100 is which is 120. So then I divided 120 by 100 which gives me 1.2. Then you multiply by the whole which is 30 by 1.2, and that gives you 36 out of 30.

Jeff's Pecentage Growing Post (Part 2)

Ms. Stanzi cannot be correct because even though Ms. Lowery has less student her percentage of the class is more greater than Ms. Stanzi's class.

Example:

Say that Ms. Stanzi had 30 students and Ms Lowery had 20.

Question 6:

Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

16 is 40% of 0.4 because when you divide 16 and 0.4 that will give you 40%.

b) What is 120% of 30

James C's Growing Post*

*work in progress

PERCENTAGE:

Question 1

What is a good definition of percentage? You should use words, symbols, pictures, and numerical samples in your definition.

Here is a good definition of percentage:

Question 2

How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

3/5, 3:2, 60%, and 0.6 are all the same because they are all equivalents.

Ratio: Keep the numerator as pt. 1, and subtract the numerator from the denominator for pt. 2:3:(5-3=)2

Percentage: Divide numerator by the denominator, then multiply by 100:
3/5=0.6
0.6 x 100 = 60%

Decimal: You take your percentage, then divide it by 100:60% / 100 = 0.6

Question 3

Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

Way 1:
Divide 80 by 100, which gives you 0.8.
Then multiply 0.8 by the desired percentage, 35.
It gives you an answer of 28, so 28 is 35% of 80.

Way 2:
Take your total, 100%, and divide it by 80. It gives you 1%, 0.8.
Multiply 0.8 by the desired percentage, 35.
You get 28, which is 35% of 80.

Way 3:
The fraction 28/80 is equal to the fraction 35/100.
28 divided by 80 = 0.35
35 divided by 100 = 0.35

Question 4

Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review.

http://linden8z.blogspot.com/2006/11/percentages-real-deal.html

This was a very good post. It basically taught everything about percentage, such as what the word "percentage" means, how to reduce a percentage.
I recommend that anyone who is looking for information on percentage for the first time should check out this post. It's very easy to follow, and contains a lot of information.

The answer to this question depends on how many students are in each class. It would be true if both classes had the same number of students, however if Ms Stanzi had 35 students in her class, and Ms Lowrey had 30, it would be false:

Ms. Stanzi
50% / 100 = 0.5
0.5 x 35 = 17.5

Ms. Lowrey
55% / 100 = 0.55
0.55 x 30 = 16.5

Question 6

Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means, solve it.

A. 16 is 40% of what number?

  • 40% of 100 = 40
  • 40 / 100 = 0.4
  • 16 x 0.4 = 40
  • 40 / 100 = 16/40

You divide 40 by 100, getting 0.4. Then multiply 0.4 by 16, the starting number.

B. What is 120% of 30?

120% of 100 = 120

  • 120 / 100 = 1.2
  • 30 x 1.2 = 36
  • 120/100 = 36/30
  • You compute 120% of 100 first, 120. Divide 120 / 100, answer is 1.2. Then multiply 1.2 by the whole number, 30. It gives you a final answer of 30/36.

    Kim's Percentage Growing Post

~~Completed and is already marked by 2 people~~

    Question 1

What is a good definition of percent? You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.

Percent is an equivalent that is written as a fraction that is out of a hundred (100). It represents as a part of a number generally out of 100. It has a percent sign (%), a fraction or ratio with a denominator of 100 and the word "cent" means 100 in French. For example:

    Question 2

How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

Three fifths, 3/5, 3:2, 60% and o.6 are all the same because they are all equivalent to each other, they are just written in a different form. Example:

    Question 3
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

    Question 4

Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review (What the post was talking about....yes you have to read the post and why others should read the post)

This post was EXCELLENT. He gave examples and pictures to help understand the process of getting a percentage. His pictures showed that you can actually have a percentage that is more than 100%. He showed that if you get an A+ and if you give out more of 100% of your best, those were examples of the possibilities of getting more than 100%. I also learned something from his post. Did you know that the word "of" actually means multiply in the "math language"? Well I didn't, so that was a little something I learned. His post was really understandable and if someone had trouble with percentage, you should check out his post... click here please to see it !

I think that Ms Stanzi can be correct because the question did not mention how many students Ms Stanzi and Ms Lowrey has. So it is important to know the amount of students that are in their class. If the amount of students are not included, (like this question) then the answer depends on your explanation. For example, if Ms Stanzi has about 40 students, 50% of it would be 20 students passing their reading goal. If Ms Lowrey has 20 students, 55% of it would be 11 students passing their reading goal. BUT! If Ms Stanzi and Ms Lowrey has the same amount of students in their class, then Ms Stanzi will be wrong. For example, if they both have 20 students in their class, 50% of it would be 10, and 55% of it would be 11, so Ms Lowrey would have the most students that passed their reading goal.

    Question 6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

    a) 16 is 40% of what number?
    b) What is 120% of 30?

Question 7: I have already marked Angelic's Growing Post and Sarika's Growing Post. I also already have two people who have marked my own Growing Post.

    K.V. 8-41

Edits and extras that I have made to my growing post:
    1. I marked
Lisa's growing post (because Mr.H said that we should mark the ones that have not been marked yet).
    2. I added a little more details on the pictures in the post that I have commented.

    Question #5

The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms. Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

I think Ms. Stanzi is correct because half of the students in her class read more then in Ms. Lowrey's.

30 students divided by 60 students =50% fo them read their reading goal

11 students divided by 20 = 55% of them read their reading goal
