Question 1

What is a good definition of percent? You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition. (suggestion gliffy is an excellent tool for adding detail to your definition.)

-----------------on to the next question-----------------

Question 2

How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

They are all equivalents.

3:2 -> 3 + 2 = 5 -> 3/5 -> 3 (divided by) 5 = 0.6 -> 0.6 x 100 = 60 -> 60%

Question 4

Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review (What the post was talking about....yes you have to read the post and why others should read the post) Hint In the side bar there are links to other schools. Three of them have done work on percentages!

I left a comment on this post right here ---> click me =)

3.5/5

It's a great post because the examples the person uses really helps you to understand percentages. I only had one little suggestion for the person, to have a better picture to use for 2/5. They put 2 pingpong tables, so it only represented the denominator. I made a suggestion for them to put 5 groups of stick people (representing the family) and have 2 of them with a pingpong table. If the person who did that put a picture like i suggested, i would've given them 4/5.

-----------------on to the next question-----------------

Question 5

The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms. Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

Ms. Stanzi can be CORRECT because they never mentioned how many students there are in each class. Here is a diagram I made on Gliffy showing my work:

Question 6

Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

This album is powered by BubbleShare - Add to my blog

This question tells us that 40% of a number is 16, so we have to find what that number is exactly. So first you divide 16 by 4.

16 (divided by) 4 (or 40%) = 4

You divide it by 4 because to find 10% of something you must divide that number by 10. Then you must multiply it by the number of the groups of 10 you want, in this case 4. So basicly, we have to work backwards to find the answer to this question. To work backwards, you have to replace MULTIPLY into DIVIDE, and the same goes for the final step.

You are left with the number FOUR. 4 represents the amount that 10 unit cubes (a rod) stands for. In 100 unit cubes (a flat), there are 10 rods, or 10 GROUPS OF FOUR:

10 groups of 4 = 40

So there for 100% is equal to 40.

b) What is 120% of 30?

**To fully understand this Bubbleshare presentation, please click on it =) It will allow you to see Jumpy and Frosty and their conversations.

This question is asking us to find 120% of 30. If you convert 120% percent into a fraction, it would be 120/100. Obviously that number is an improper fraction (the numerator is larger than the denominator), so you would need to squares to solve the problem. 100% would equal 30 and so, you would need to find 20% and then add it to 30. Well then, let's get started!

First, we need to find 10% of 30.

30 (divided by) 10 (10%) = 3

The next step is to multiply the product by two (2 groups of 10).

2 groups of 3 = 6 -or- 20%

All that's left to do is add 100% (30) to 20% (6). If you add those 2 together you get 120% (100 + 20 = 120)!

100 = 30
+20 = 6
120 = 36

And there you have it =) Oh! I forgot that i made a Bubbleshare thingy on it . . . Here it is =)

Melissa's Growing post

Okie...Here's my growing post
Question 1: What is a good definition of percent? You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.

-A percent, to me, is the overall number out of 100. It is expressed as this symbol:%. It supposedly came from the term "cent" which means "100" in French. And since a percentage meant something out of 100, we call it "per" "cent". Some percentages are: 50% (1/2 or half), 25% (1/4 or quarter), and 10% (1/10)...or dime...Haha I'm just kidding.

Here is
my percentage web. I included most of what I've already said above, and used gliffy. I'm not a total expert at using it yet so it's not perfect. Hopefully it's understandable.

Question
2:How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

-These all equal the same thing. The only difference is tha
t they're written in different equivalents. Don't get confused. Let me explain...

-
This column shows the different equivalents.

-These are the equivalents for 3/5.

-These are the equivalents for 3:2.

-These are the equivalents for 60%.

-These are the equivalents for 0.60.

No matter how different you write them, they'll always equal the same thing.

Question 3:
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.

-Okay, here's my grid that shows 35% percent out of 80.

1. The first way I came up with is to figure out 1%. It's probably the easiest way for finding the answer, and it's always correct. 80/100 (/=divide. I don't think the computer has a dividing sign) =0.8.
0.8x35=28. 28=35% of 80.

2. Here's the second way. 80/10=8

8/2=4(5%)
8x3=24+5%(4)=28

3. Here's my third way. 80/10=8
8/2=4(5%)
4x7=28

Question 4:
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review

-Okay. here are some the one I've found...

-http://linden8am.blogspot.com/ - this class is learning how to convert decimals, fractions, and percentages. I left a comment for one of the students saying that their scribe was very well done and that it was easy to read and was understandable because of the diagrams.

Question 5: The principal announced that 50% of the chi
ldren in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

-I think that Ms. Stanzi isn't correct; unl
ess she has more students. See, if Ms. Stanzi claims to have the greater amount of accomplishment, that must mean that she has more students.

Question 6:
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?

To find out what the number is, I divided 40% by 40%. 16/40=0.4.
The next thing I did was multiply 1% (0.4) by 100. 0.4x100=40.

40/100=16/40

If you divide 40 by 100, and 16 by 40, you should get the same answer. If you do, then you know that you did this correctly. 40/100=0.4 16/40=0.4

b) What is 120% of 30?

For this question, you could instantly tell that the answer is going to be over 100%.

To find the answer, first you'll have to know that the fraction of this question is 120/100. Knowing that, you'll have to find out the extra 20%.
This is what I did: 30=100%
To find 20%, 30/10=3x2=6
6=20%
The rest is pretty straight forward: 100%+20%=120%.
30+6=36.
36=120%.

QUESTION.4
"Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review (What the post was talking about....yes you have to read the post and why others should read the post) Hint In the side bar there are links to other schools. Three of them have done work on percentages!"

Here is a post on 8Z math that i commented on. It really helps for answering question 3 on our growing posts. It explains 3 different ways to find a percent.

http://linden8z.blogspot.com/2006/12/review-of-percent.html

QUESTION.5
"The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not."

She CAN be correct because there can be more students in half of Ms. Stanzi's class than in Ms. Lowrey's class.

QUESTION.6
"Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
a) 16 is 40% of what number?
The question asks us to find out what has 16 as 40%. To do this is simple. First we know that 40% + 40% + 20% = 100%. So since we already know that 16 = 40% of x, we just need to know what 20% is. To do that divide 40% by 2. (40%/2 = 20%). So 16/2 = 8, so we can say that 8 is 20% of x. And now we add everything together. 16 + 16 + 8 = 40. There. Now we know that x = 40, so 16 is 40% of 40.

b) What is 120% of 30?"
This one is easier than A. We know that 30 is 100% of 30. So we just need to add 20%. Just go...(30/100 = 0.3 x 20 = 6) So 30 + 6 = 36 and we conclude that 120% of 30 is 36.

My answer:
A Percent is a number out of 100. EXAMPLE=20% is 20/100
1.How are three fith's (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6all the same ?n Use a picture and words to show your answer.
My answer:
1/5=20% 1/5x3=60% 10=60 3:2 =part/part+whole= fraction 1/5=20% 1/5x3=60%
3.Show 3 different ways to find 35%of 80.
My answer:
first we have to find what what 1% =80divided by 100 =8 so 1 = 8. (1%)x 35 =28 so 35% of 80 is 28.
4. Find a Link that deals with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review.

My Answer:
Ms.Stanzi is corret because there can be more children in M. Lowerys Class.
My work:
20/40=50% 11/20=55%
6.Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
a) 16 is 40% of what number?
b) What is 120% of 30?
My Answer:
A. 40%of 100 is 40
40/100=0.4
16x0.4=40
40/100=16/40
I got this answer by dividing 40 by 100 that gives me 0.4, and then you multiply the decimal by the part that gives you 40% of 16.
B. 120% of 100 is 120120/100=1.230 x 1.2=36120/100 = 36/30
I got this answer by finding out what 120%of 100 is and it is 100, and then I divided 120by 100which gives me 1.2.Then you multiply by the whole which is 30 by 1.2 and that gives you 30 out of 36

Dakota's Growing Post 1-6

Question 1
What is a good definition of percent?
You should use words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition.
A percent is a number that is out of one hundred.Like 60% is 60/100 as a fraction, so as u can see,it is out of a hundred.
I dont know how to get Pics!
Question 2
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.6 all the same? Use pictures and words to showyour work.
1/5=20% 1/5 x 3=60%, .6x 10=60
3:2=part/part+whole=a fraction 1/5=20% 1/5x3=60%
I dont know how to get pics!
Question 3
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80.
first we find out what 1% equals. 80 divided by 100 equals .8
so now we no wat 1% is so: .8 (1%)x35 equals 28 so 35% of 80 is 28
2. 1% is .8. .8 x 10=8 .8 x 10=8 .8 x 10=8 8+8+8=24
if 10% is 8, then 5% is 4. so 24 + 4=28
5 goes into 35 7 times. 5% is 4. 4x7=28

Question 4
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review.
http://linden8m.blogspot.com/2006/11/understanding-percentages.html#links
Question 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms. Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

Ms. Stantzi could be correct because her class might have more students in her class than Ms. Lowrey's classroom.
Example:
20/40 is 50% 11/20=55%
see, so even though Ms. Stanzi has a lower percentage of her students reaching the goal than Ms. Lowrey's students, she still has more children.

Question 6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
A) 16 is 40% of what number?
It's percentage is not 100% it is a lower number because 16 is smaller than 40. So Mr. Harbeck needs to know what # has 16 that is equal to 40%. This is what i thought of :40/100=.40 x 40=16 So the unit square is worth 40. 40=100% 16=40%
B) What is 120% of 30? I need to find out what 120% is when the whole number is 30. This is what I thought of so far :
30 x 120%= 36,003,600/100 =36120% =36
How do U get Pics?!

PS to justins growing post

For some reason I still can't upload pictures onto my computer because nothing pops up. Hopefully sometime next week I will try to fix my computer so it works.

Justin's Percentage Growing Post

Question 5:

The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

Ms. Stanzi: Ms. Lowrey:

40/2=20 40/1.5=26.66

No, she can't be correct because there is more of an average of students that are meeting their reading goal and the only way Ms. Stanzi could be correct is if a bigger number of kids start improving their reading.

Question 6:
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.
a) 16 is 40% of what number?
b) What is 120% of 30?

a) 40% of 100 is 40
40/100=0.4
16 x 0.4=40
40/100 = 16/40

I got this answer by first dividing 40 by 100 and that gives me 0.4.So then you multiply the decimal by the part and that gives you 40% of 16.

b) 120% of 100 is 120
120/100=1.2
30 x 1.2=36

120/100 = 36/30

I got this answer by first finding out what 120% of 100 is which is 120. So then I divided 120 by 100 which gives me 1.2. Then you multiply by the whole which is 30 by 1.2, and that gives you 36 out of 30.
